King of the Watch - The Gatekeepers Get a Chance!
We hyped up SG-1 last week as the previous kings, describing them as a clear top tier team. WeUnited might have heard us, but if they did, they definitely didn't take it to heart as they surprised the audience in a 4 - 2 victory over the reigning kings. Unfortunately, WeUnited's reign was put on hold due to a team emergency this week. While we expect to see them next week to revisit their dominance, we'll be moving ahead with this week's challengers, who are taking an expedited route to the crown!
This week, we have an aptly named team stepping onto the scene in The Gatekeepers. GKGG comes in with a large, mysterious question mark as to their ability to perform. We haven't seen very much high level play from them, but each team has to start somewhere. The biggest upside to GKGG showing up in this event is the ability to call them the Gatekeepers of the throne! Yes, you know that in King of the Watch we never miss an opportunity for a good play on words, and this one definitely excites us.
Our second challenger this week has faced GKGG prior to this meeting; losing to them in a clean sweep in an ESL Atlantic Showdown Qualifier. ExAequo joins up in this week's KotW looking for revenge against their opponent. ExAequo has shown moments of greatness, having beaten the strong Prets team in June, but it remains to be seen if they can focus their skills this week to become king!
The name of the game is Stopwatch: Both teams will play offense and defense on the same map. Teams play to complete the map in the fastest time they can manage. If both teams fail to complete the map on offense, the match is judged by which team progressed to the furthest objective.
King of the Watch will enforce a One Hero Limit in it's matches.
Two challenger teams will play in a Best of 3 (Bo3) series, in order to proceed to a Best of 7 (Bo7) match with the current champion. As the previous champion WeUnited had to bow out, the challenger teams will be heading straight to a Best of 7 (Bo7) Match.
Currently, all maps are allowed.
The loser of a map picks the next map.
The first map played in the Challenger Head to Head (Bo3) will be decided by the Tournament Organizers. Challenger is granted first map choice in the Best of 7.
The champion earns bragging rights as King of the Watch, alongside a whopping $300 for the team! The losing team gets to go back to the drawing board to figure out how to improve for next time…
